Handymo is an installation that invites the audience to draw by hand, and transfers their drawings into a stop motion piece. It aims to emphasize the beauty of hand drawn stop motion versus digital animation and hopes to share with the audience a singular and very human experience. At the same time, by collecting the results from different users, crowdsourcing all the stop motion pieces as a whole, Handymo is able to present the value of diversity and the unique creativity of each individual.

Handymo involves physical drawing activity and web application. Audience can draw on a special-made drawing table with markers and erasers, capture their drawings, and make the drawings into a stop-motion piece immediately.

As a motion designer, I am especially interested in stop motion and motion pieces that are drawn frame by frame. The manipulation and creativity involved in producing a hand-drawn stop-motion animation creates a unique style which is very different from computer-generated animations. Also, the results will be slightly different depending on the individual process. I want the audience to enjoy this creative and surprising experience of hand-drawn stop-motion animation.

To emphasize the beauty of hand drawn stop motion versus digital animation, this installation will assign frames from a digital animation for people to trace and draw. The process will also allow people to express their own creativity and personality within the same constraint. The users can see their motion result on the screen, comparing to the digital animation right after they finish all the drawings.

By collecting the results from different users, crowdsourcing all the stop motion pieces as a whole, we are able to celebrate the value of creativity and the uniqueness of each individual.
