Lady Mengjiang

My thesis is an interactive storytelling application, which tells the story of Lady Mengjiang, an ancient Chinese legend.

My thesis is an interactive storytelling application, which tells the story of Lady Mengjiang, an ancient Chinese legend. The tale of Lady Mengjiang is one of the most famous of four ancient legends in China, but in spite of its fame, many new generations have not grown up listening to this story. The story details the journey of Lady Mengjiang, a brave woman who risks her life to rescue her husband, who was kidnapped by the Emperor and forced into slavery during the construction of the Great Wall. In the game, players help Lady Mengjiang navigate difficult terrain and challenging tasks in order to find her husband. The application employs a pop-up picture book aesthetic to tell the story, which doubles as a chance for viewers to learn about life in China over 2000 years ago, and the explosive politics of the construction of the Great Wall. The game has two parts: the story, which is told through a mix of interaction and flash animation, and the game, which is more interactive and includes tasks that the player must complete to move onto the next level.
