Future Baby
DRAWING THE LINES BETWEEN THE UNNATURAL AND THE UNETHICAL

Future Baby is a web toy that explores the collision of our desire to conceive perfect children with a fast expanding menu of reproductive choices. A decision tree invites us to the near future, where we can predetermine the traits of our offspring, as if they were custom features of a new car. Among other choices, we can decide that our child should be extroverted and/or analytical, tall or athletic, blue-eyed or green.

After we craft the genetic narrative of our Future Baby, the toy presents us with results. It suggests scenarios where dominant classes, nationalities and races will quickly become more so, as well as the reverse possibility of dystopian perfection, where lack of diversity leads to illness and conflict. Future Baby questions societies’ motivation to shape it’s own evolution by introducing “desirable traits” and editing out “negative traits”. The web toy poses the question: should ethics lead scientific development or should science come first, morality later?
