THE ART OF MOTION

A SERIES OF DATA PAINTINGS EXTRACTED FROM BIOMETRIC RUNNING STATISTICS CREATED TO PUSH THE WAYS IN WHICH HUMAN-IN-MOTION DATA CAN BE DISPLAYED AND TO CHALLENGE THE USE OF DATA VISUALIZATION.

• • The Art of Motion is an artistic installation that puts customized fitness tracking in a new light. Each piece is a compilation of data collected over the course of a run. This data includes duration, distance, overall mile average, heart rate average and start time, along with the runner’s name and location. With materials like paint, food dye, milk, soap, kitchen tools and a hair dryer, data artist, Marielle Verni, uses simple algorithms to transform numerical running values into lively pieces of art. Research for The Art of Motion includes an exploration of alternative uses of data visualizations as well as the emergence of data art and growing popularity of customized health data through wearable devices. The artistic intention of this project is to provoke feelings of wonder by the viewers and to show that running data can go beyond charts, graphs and numbers.
